Aarupadai Veedu Trip – A Trip to the Six Adobes of Lord Muruga !!

Lord Muruga happens to be the renowned and the most widely worshipped Lord in Tamil Nadu. Aarupadai Veedu Trip, one of the most famous among the South Indian temple tours is indeed a must visit trip.

Aarupadai Veedu is the Six Adobes or the Six War Houses of The Lord Muruga. Though there are many temples that are dedicated Lord Muruga, these six temples are considered very important and hence, deserve a special mention.

Palani

Thiru Avinankudi temple in Palani is one of the most ancient temples in Dindigul Dist., situated perfectly at an elevation of about 1500 feet above the sea level. Lord Muruga of the temple is known as ‘Kuzhanthai Velayuthaswami’. He is also known as Dhandayuthapani. Danda – Staff, Ayutha – weapon, Pani – Hands. The Lord who is having a staff as a weapon in His hands. This is the place where Murugan resided after his feud with his family over a divine fruit. The statue is made of Navabashanam and was designed by sage Boghar.

Swamimalai

Swamimalai temple, also known as Thiruverakam is located at a distance of 5KM from Kumbakonam and is built on artificial Hill. Lord Swaminathan is the presiding deity worshipped in the temple. The temple honors the incident where Lord Muruga explained the essence of the Pranava Mantra “OM” to His father Lord Shiva.

Thiruchendur

Thiruchendur is perfectly located in the Tuticorin district along the Indian Ocean. The fight between Lord Murugan and Asura King Soorapadman took place in Thiruchendur. Hence, Thiruchendur is the only place (Padai Veedu or War House) where Lord Muruga stayed with His army when he went to destroy the Demon. The temple commemorates the event, “Soorasamharam” in a grand manner every year.

Thiruparankundram

This is considered as the first of Aarupadai Veedu. The temple is also known as Paramakundru and it is located near Madurai. Thiruparankundram is the place where Lord Murugan married the divine daughter of Lord Indra, Devasana (Deivayanai). The famous Tamil Scholar Nakkeerar worshipped Lord Muruga of this shrine.

Thiruthani

Thiruthani is located near Chennai. In this temple, Lord Murugan reclaimed his inner peace after waging a war with the Demon Soorapadman and married Valli here. One of the famous festivals that are celebrated here is the Kannadi Sevai. During this festival, the six faces of the Lord are exposed through the mirror.

Pazhamudircholai

Pazhamudircholai is the 6th Aarupadai Veedu located on the outskirts of Madurai. The place is also called as Solai Malai. The Holy stream at this temple is known as “Nupura Ganga” and it is believed that Lord Muruga took bath in this water. This is the only temple among the six adobes where He graces His devotees with both his consorts Valli and Deivanai. Also, this is the place where Lord appeared before the great Tamil Poetess Avvaiyar asking her for Sutta Pazham or Sudadha Pazham.
